The Future is Now – SNK Playmore becomes… SNK

SNK logo

Have you noticed that in their recent The King of Fighters XIV trailers (and the articles written recently), SNK stopped using the name Playmore?

At the KOF XIV event in Akihabara, Company President Kouichi Sotoyama announced the re-branding of SNK Playmore as SNK again. In addition to the “re-branding”, they also brought back the “The Future is Now” slogan of SNK back in its NEOGEO days.

According to a statement, they reverted back to the SNK name and slogan to refocus in the video game business which brings in a new era to the company. They added that these changes marks the return of SNK. Because of the success of their game franchises, they are still a known brand until now. This also signifies the return to their origins and provide entertainment to their fans old and new alike. They promised to continue making games and expand their properties in the future.

When SNK went bankrupt back in year 2000, its founder Eikichi Kawasaki left the company and formed Playmore. Which in turn, reacquire the SNK properties from Aruze, which even led to a legal battle by that time. After Mr. Kawasaki’s “re-acqusition” of the SNK properties from Aruze, Playmore became SNK Playmore.

During that time, they also started entering the pachislot market in 2004. Ended their support for the NEOGEO. SNK Playmore entered in the mobile gaming market as well. Their gaming venture went to a slowdown after the abysmal performance of The King of Fighters XII.

Even if The King of Fighters XIII did better, the problems caused by KOF XII did a huge damage to them. Employees leaving or getting fired that almost closed the gaming division and focus on pachislot instead. Even though they survived, they “stopped” developing games (and made mobile games instead) for a while.

Making a last-ditch attempt to make a comeback in fighting games, they slowly developed KOF XIV in April 2014. When 2015 came, things suddenly changed, Leyou Games Group, through Ledo Millennium, acquired 81.25% majority stake at the company. With changes in the management, and the changes in the business trends due to market decline and stricter laws. SNKP decided to give up the pachislot business and refocus on games.

Earlier this year, they opened a new subsidiary called SNK Entertainment that focuses on licensing and promotion.
