SNK’s classic fighting series made an impression on us last year, and much like the console releases, another year means a new iteration. In this case, sequels are welcome, as this 2012 version sports some great enhancements. Some fighting games are still a little iffy on touchscreens, but SNK has proven its worth and The King of Fighters-i 2012 is thankfully not backstepping.

The iOS follow-up to King of Fighters i has arrived on the UK and US App Stores.

Big changes for this latest addition of the 2D fighting series include an expanded roster of characters (32 – up from 24) and two new game modes – Challenge and Time Attack.

Most importantly, though, King of Fighters i 2012 packs wi-fi multiplayer for both ranked and unranked battles between friends and randoms.

Rosters

The new characters come from the Art of Fighting, Psycho Soldier, Kimn, and Ikari teams, while two more characters, Kyo and Iori, are available via IAP, according to the app description.

If you liked the trading cards element of the first title, then you’ll also be pleased to know that there are now even more cards and illustrations, as well as “rough sketches” of the series exclusive to this iOS outing.

The King of Fighters i 2012 is an iPhone-only title, priced at £4.99 / $6.99. The original game has had its price slashed in celebration of the 2012 edition going live, and can be nabbed for £2.99 / $4.99

SNK is bringing its most popular fighters together for a dream battle played not with punches, kicks and combos, but with cards. The publisher announced today SNK Dream Battle, a social card battle game for the GREE mobile platform.

In SNK Dream Battle, you collect “fighter cards” by clearing quests. From your set of cards, you create a deck of ten, which you use to face off against bosses with other players.

Pre-registration for SNK Dream Battle started today. The game will be released first on feature phones, then on smartphones.

SpekSNK has posted an exclusive interview with the Producer of The King of Fighters XIIIKei Yamamoto “, don’t miss it.

1. THE KING OF FIGHTERS XIII has already hit stores and the critics had been very positive. Being developed in 2D has been fantastic news for a lot of people as well as a touch of identity, but what aspect are you most proud of?

SNK PLAYMORE: We are extremely proud that SNK PLAYMORE has been able to make 2D fighting games for so many years. This doesn’t mean we think 3D fighting games are bad, as we feel both game types have their own particularities and charm. However, we believe SNK has been able to show to all players that “KOF XIII” is the legitimate evolution of 2D fighting games.

In celebration of the update’s release, ATLUS also today announced a limited time $10 price reduction, dropping the game to $39.99 and making it even easier to justify picking up what GameSpot hailed as the “Best Fighting Game of 2011.” This discount also comes in commemoration of the title’s selection as an official part of Evo Championship Series, for which ATLUS today revealed a special bonus for all all paid KOF XIII entrants at the Evo World Finals.

Upon formally registrating for the KOF XIII tournament at Evo 2012, challengers will reserve an exclusive, extremely limited t-shirt featuring Mai Shiranui and the Evo Championship Series logo. Not only is the t-shirt poised to become an ultra-rare collectible, but because sizing information is taken as part of the registration process, public flauntability is ensured as well.

According to the Official Blog of KOF XIII and Rising Star Games the official Patch of the game is out in Asia and EU Territories for PlayStation 3 ( Later for XBOX 360 ), and here is a list of changes about the new Patch by SNKPlaymore and Rising Star Games :

  • Ranked Match : You can now set your rooms so that players with low bars or low disconnects can’t join in.
  • Custom Match : Your room and filter settings will be temporarily memorized by the game.
  • Connection Display : The Antenna’s level display has been improved (I guess this means it won’t lie like it used to)
  • Online Connection : The stability of online connection has been overall improved (Note that it says stability, not speed.)
  • Player Data : Fix(es) have been made to “Player Data” (What exactly the fixes are, it doesn’t say.. probably the reset bug)
  • Replay : Fix(es) have been made to “Replay” (What exactly the fixes are, it doesn’t say.. my guess is the delete bug: you deleted files on the 1st page no matter what you did.)
  • Misc : Some fixes have been made to “Customize”, and also to issues caused with certain characters.
  • Ranked Match Filtering : one of the most requested additions; players may now set conditions for their opponent’s connection. When a player who doesn’t meet the standby conditions tries to enter the Ranked match, a warning message will be displayed and the match cancelled.
  • Improved Filtering : filtering functionality in general is dramatically improved. Previously, certain connection data was insufficiently filtered and the player had a chance of connecting to opponents with poor connection quality. Now, more aggressive filtering should ensure that players are only matched with opponents who meet their filter settings.
  • Improved Connection Antenna : the computation behind the players’ connection antenna, the meter indicating the quality of a player’s connection, has been improved, resulting in a more accurate and consistent measurement.
  • Temporarily Saved Custom Match Settings : players may continue searching for opponents with the same settings as long as the player remains in the PLAYER MATCH/RANKED MATCH menu.
  • Character-specific Bug Fixes : NESTS-Style Kyo and Iori with the Power of Flames no longer become unresponsive under certain circumstances.
  • Additional refinements, fixes, and more!
