So well, we know the new game is coming out and looks kinda cool, so any discussion of the series as a whole should have a thread.

Oh and try to go light on the hate, we've all heard it before, none of the MK games are for everybody, but they do all have a certain campy appeal.

Although if you want to hate on Mythologies and Special Forces, feel free to as much as you'd like.

I've always liked Mortal Kombat. It's really the only truly successful ongoing Western-made fighting game series, and even though the originals have aged horribly, some of the newer (PS2/Xbox/GC era) ones are broken, and some games never were any good, most of the games are still a lot of fun to play with friends. It's still satisfying all of these years later to be able to bust out a memorized Fatality on someone.

In terms of games, Shaolin Monks is overall, by far, the best title to have the name "Mortal Kombat" attached to it as of this writing. As for fighting games, even though it seemed very cheesy and shoehorned, and the violence was toned down a lot, MK Vs DCU really isn't that terrible.

Can't wait for this bad boy, but it's taking forever for more news to pop up. Come on WB, Ed Boon, give us some news already.

I have always liked MK because of this dark sensation that the game always has, its a different flavor than all the other fighting games i play ( and i do play almost everything )

To be honest I haven't given a shit about MK since 3, but seeing their gameplay decisions so far, they're going in the right direction.

It's also nice to see MK move along and add supers but give them a distinct bone-shattering twist.

Man... I haven't played an MK since Trilogy and MK4. I've never owned one but I rented the games like hell on SNES. 1,2,3, Ultimate, and Trilogy on N64. I remember enjoying 4 too, as well as Sub Zero Mythologies or whatever, since Sub Zero was my favorite character next to Raiden. I've been meaning to check out the newer games and especially MK vs DC, but I'm looking for a good price.

Personally, it's really weird that I actually kinda like the series, I'm pretty sickened by gore and the old ultraviolence. I just can't stand seeing human beings in pain. I can watch scary movies, but slashers and stuff like Saw, Ichi the Killer, and even (maybe even especially) anime like Gantz just make me squeemish. Though, I guess in the old games it was ok with the sprites and all (and there was no innards and crap, just blood and bones really). Everyone always talks about how they wanted to try out all the fatalities when they were younger but I didn't do that as much. For me it was all about the Kodes! Cheesy

I was pretty excited about the new game, until I saw the full video Kung Lao cutting someone in half with that hat sawblade of his... I'll just keep my eye on news from a distance Tongue I'm interested to know who the other characters are. But my personal favorite Midway series has always been Gauntlet.. is that from the MK team? I always felt it was.. I want a new Gauntlet.. the last one was crap though.

yeah, that's pretty much what I like about it too, the dark world and atmosphere, and a lot of the character designs (kung lao was always a favorite with his buzzsaw hat, even if he does use it to decapitate people).

also, uppercuts always felt real damn nice in MK... that better be retained in the new game.

Quoted for truth XD, i swear ... if it wasn't for MK, uppercuts would be a thing of mehness XD.

And a piece of advice ... don't waist your money on MK vs DC, really its not worth it at all. Waiting for the new one is a much wiser choice to make.

hehe yeah.. actually the trailers for MK vs DC gave me mixed ideas about the gameplay, some stuff looked interesting and fun and some stuff looked terrible, but most of the gameplay looked pretty cheap. Still, that's just my view of the trailer, I thought I'd pick it up if it hit 9.99 or 14.99. I'm sure I've picked up worse for that much before. Also, me and my fighting game gang are big fans of DC and Batman... I used to be a Marvel guy, especially because of the old 90s X-men cartoon, but as much as I still love X-men and Marvel, Batman has put DC a cut above them for me.

What would you guys recommend out of the last gen mortal kombats? I've been thinking of picking up that collection that had 3 of them packed in or something.

I think that most of the MK games, 2D and 3D are worth playing, only 4 feels like it's aged terribly. That collection with Deception, Armageddon and Shaolin Monks is a great deal as the two fighters are solid and Shaolin Monks is a fantastic co-op brawler, but it is also worth getting Deadly Alliance to complete the set as that one probably has the best gameplay.

Oh yes, Shaolin Monks... I think I remember my brother giving that a 3 day rental once. It was pretty fun, if I remember correctly. I'll probably go back and get that collection and Deadly Alliance after I'm done with the DoA series. Maybe as a followup to the new MK game when it comes out. Hopefully all this is done before the console release of KOFXIII Tongue

Shaolin Monks was really fun, especially on co-op.

Deadly Alliance and Deception were interesting, the story was taking interesting turns, and gameplay felt well balanced. Plus some of the extras you unlocked were preatty fun.

Armageddon had it's merits, the Mortal Kart was fun, but all the characters from the previous 2 games felt a little stripped. the Create-a-character was also good, but had a few flaws with the moves, most combos didn't animate very well since you mix and match all character's moves.

in all honesty, when I played MK back in the days, it was deffinately not for the gameplay Tongue I really don't know what to expect of the gameplay from the series, honestly. I played MK during a time when I just wanted to see my fighters do cool crap. I played 2 players and stuff but hardly at a competitive level. I remember trying to beat my brother and arcade mode using nothing but uppercuts and raiden's bbf, lol. I've never seen the series from a gameplay perspective... so, how deep were the 2D games as far as gameplay goes, anyways? Compared to other fighters? I've heard people say they didn't feel the 3D games stood up to the 2D games gameplay-wise, and then ive seen people who say the opposite (saying the 3D games improved it).

I think when it comes to the 2D and 3D games, MK2, UMK3 and Deadly Alliance are all best in terms of gameplay. I'd say it's hard to judge the 2D MK games against others but, what I think is that the special moves in Mortal Kombat (especially in the 2D games) are so integral to strategy, because whereas in other games attacks are just attacks in the end, there's a lot of manipulation of positioning and your opponent, for example you have Sub Zero's freeze, which doesn't do damage itself but renders an opponent helpless, or Sektor's teleport uppercut which can be used to wrongside an opponent at the moment they try to attack you. One combo set up by these moves can change the whole flow of a round.

So I think in a way, MK is a more tactical game that other fighters, which tend to be more about reflexes.
