When you buy a new game, it obviously doesn't have later patches, bug fixes, or download stuff available (except when it's on disc but you have to pay extra).

Do the Game of the Year, Platinum Edition, Best Seller discs tend to have that stuff added, and any noteable examples please?  (Batman!)

Most Game of the Year versions include everything and it's usually patched to the latest (Most likely Final) version of the game. As for Platinum or Best seller versions, that's something you have to look out for, check the box info or look it up online.

Most Game of the Year/Ultimate/Complete/Gold Editions usually have all the DLC and all currently released patches already integrated into the game, on 360 it's usually included on a second disk (put second disk in and you install the patches first, then choose the DLC altogether or piece by piece), although fighting games tend to have it already on 1 disk when it comes to 360 (although there has only been 2 I think, MK Komplete Editon, and SSFIV Arcade Edition, but Arcade Edition only included characters and patches not costumes since Capcom suck).

However you have to look out for some companies. Sony never include there DLC on disk in there GOTY (pretty ironic considering they're promoting Blu-Ray and all, but Sony are online pass assholes you know), instead Sony always put DLC vouchers in there Game of the Year Editions yet still raise the price over the normal edition and I don't think the patches are integrated into there games either, except fo Killzone 2 in the Killzone Trilogy pack which included the patches already on its disk along with Killzone 1, however still had to use a voucher for the MP map packs.

Borderlands Game of the Year Edition, the first prints with the Duke Nukem beta vouchers had the DLC on vouchers and you had to download the patches manually, however they changed it and all DLC is now included on the disk (and on a second disk on 360 version).

Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition, all the DLC was included on disk as unlockables in the PS3 version (unlocked right away if you have a compelted save file of regular RE5), however 360 versions was vouchers since Capcom cried and said people would steal the DLC if they put it on a second disk.

As for XBOX Platinum Hits and PS2 Greatest Hits these are usually just the normal versions of the game, but with the Platinum/Greatest Hits label on the box and disk. There is a few exceptions like Mass Effect, the Platinum Hits version of it actually had improved coding making it a bit more polished and included the first DLC, the second Mass Effect DLC wasn't compatible with the Platinum Hits version when it launched because of the updated code (I guess they fixed this by now, but that's how it was when it first released).

Not sure if you were wanting specifics on Batman or you mentioned it as one you already knew, but Batman Arkham City GOTY includes all DLC and patches (all on 1 disk on PS3, second disk on 360). Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY was pretty pointless, it added 3D support not in the original (0 fucks was given) and included I think it was 3 of the challenge room DLC maps (it has a lot more than just 3, but they only included 3, lame, I think Joker was still free DLC for PS3 and still not put on disk in GOTY either).
