This was always going to happen, It was destined to be a case of "get it whilst you can" Like those Super Mario World variants from a few years back, or the various attempts at home made Final Fantasies and the like. Someguy even got burned over drawing schematics for a new
Dragon's Lair
level of all things.
Very, very few companies would ever be cool with it.
Still 'tis a truly awesome game and will be out and available in the intarnets forever now. Regardless of whether it's legally pulled down or not.

Anyone got any news on the whole Sega pulling the game out?
Kotaku posted that Sega of Europe contacted them about blocking the game. Some people are guessing that it was the Europe division who requested the links to be taken out, despite that the guys from the remake having contacted Sega of America and Japan.

Yup, those were the assholes from SEGA Europe. They are now in this holier-than-thou position out of fucking jealousy that an independent fangame released something so big and so well done that they couldn't have done in more of the almost 20 years the saga started.
Let's face it: SEGA forgot everything about SOR and they focused only in Yakuza (his only current awesome series) and in the shitty Sonic games they're done recently. They've forgotten Outrun, Golden Axe, Shenmue, Phantasy Star, etc. So now that after somebody else released something with high quality, now they feel butthurt.
Fuck them, seriously!

Funny thing is, the remake without the SoR Maker tool it would still do as one hell of a PSN, Xbox Arcade or WiiWare game, all they would need to add was online co-op and versus. If Sega actually had some brains they'd hire the guys from bombergames and release this puppy, heck give them some funding or personel so they could do even more, like maybe new art-style for the sprites instead of relying on the old ones. That way not only they would be able to capitalize on the whole thing but also support a small team that's proven to be very good on reviving a franchise that Sega themselfes have abandoned.
Yeah, while the Yakuza and Valkyria Chronicles games are the only decent ones they've been making, the rest isn't going well at all. Sonic is still in a questionable state despite Sonic Colors being an okay game, they messed up Golden Axe with Beast Riders, completely reject the idea of porting the latest VF5 revision despite the fan-interest and that they've done good on the 360 with their online support, Phantasy Star never really went beyond PSU, the psp games feel like attempts to cash in on the monster hunter craze when they could easily remake or re-imagine the 4 original that got the series started, or even bring back some of the Saturn classics like Bug, Clockwork knight and others. There's just a shit-ton of lost oportunities for them.

Oh trust me on that: Bomberlink it's a real genius, even tho it took him 8 years to have it done there it is, the programming was done 100% by him. Other guys supported with the spriting, music, art and whatnot, but yeah, this project was simply well crafted.
And yeah, SEGA stop being a douche and let this fangame be on the move, you don't fucking realize that this game it's opening the interest of new gamers who didn't know the original games (in them forums some guys just had no idea of the old games), so now they'd be interested in trying them classics!
And for fuck's sake
RELEASE A NEW DAMN
SHENMUE, OUTRUN
AND

See SEGA is just a piece of shit company now (like so many others) they are focused on the causal side of game now (which means any Sonic game you can find, not saying sonic is bad but they are just making him more and more shitty everyday) It took the threat of Atlus buying the rights to the Yakuza franchise to get sega to release 3 and they CUT content, they decided to sell DLC and CUT content WTF.

I can't say I'm too surprised. I'm just glad I got the game when I did. The fact that the devs didn't bother getting permission from SEGA Europe is perplexing. 8 years of work is worth a little extra protection.
There's speculation that the Europe division might have a vested interest in this IP, if that's the case then I can't blame them. People already started selling copies of SoRR v4, it'd only be a matter of time before they started selling v5. On top of that the game got a lot of press from some well-known game sites. I kind of wish they didn't meddle in all this without talking to the devs. If the devs encouraged the press then it's their own fault. I'd like to point at SEGA and say they're a bunch of punks, but they're fully within their rights on this one.
Valve did something similar blocking people from running modded servers because users were asking for donations for scripts that bypassed the item trading and selling system. With all the press v5 got and a history of people profitting off his work this conclusion was inevitable.
Hopefully the divisions the devs did get permission from help them out somehow. 8 years is a lot of work.

Well, in fact B contacted SEGA, sent letters to SEGA Japan, America and Europe. Only SEGA of America replied and acknowledged their existence, which made them think they were cool with it, otherwise, they'd have sent a C&D immediately.
Seems the problem it's with SEGA Europe, though.

So then the articles were wrong and they DID contact Europe. That's an odd oversight by Kotaku. The fact remains that the devs didn't wait for letters back from each division, they
assumed
everything was good. You'd think they'd be a little more vigilant than that.

But then again they can't just drop everything they were doing just to wait for a response that never arrived from Europe and Japan division only to resume after they got their response, how long would that take, they've send letter for each division quite some time ago I remember seeing on their boards not so long after v4 came out.

after the game was removed, sor2 was released for iphone (in the usual shitty emulation as other sega genesis classics for iphone).
anyway we are talking about pc world, when something is released, even if it's officially removed you can find it somewhere else

They didn't have to "drop everything," they could have been extrememly persistent, sent letter after letter, tried to call... Or better yet, finish and then not release the game until they had full permission. 8 years of work thwarted by one measly letter? I think that's worth the persistence. It's not like this game was paying their rent.
I know we all want (and thankfully have) the finished product and it doesn't seem fair, but that's what happens when corners are cut sometimes. It's dumb, it's annoying, and it seems like a giant waste of time, but Sega Europe was fully within their rights. Once again, I blame all that press the game got when it came out.
But yeah, we have copies so that means the world will still have v5.

WEll, I don't mind having a mirror here at CX in case people wants it. v5 it's really worth the play and B told me that, despite this cockblocking from SEGA Europe, he'll finish the last bug patch and balance issues just to give full closure at 8 years of development.
So yeah, this is the PC world, v5 will live!
