Who came first? King or Mai Shiranui?

While Athena may be considered SNK's first female character, what about their first fighting game character? This comes in term of accessible play BTW.
AoF 1 was released in Japan in September 1992, whereas Fatal Fury 2 (Mai's debut) was released in Dec. 1992.
Based off this King predates Mai, however what if there were promotional stuff for Fatal Fury 2 that revealed Mai long before AoF1 was released in arcades? Would promotions count as a factor in this case?
On the other hand, AoF1 would have been in development after Fatal Fury 1 and during that period it may have been decided to have the character of King a female and as such makes her the FIRST fighting game lady for SNK.

Umm as I said in my post the discussion is based on ACCESSIBLE PLAY, in other words, King was accessible for play in 2 Player mode of AoF1, timeline doesn't factor into this ;p

Umm, I'm just saying that she came before Mai all around. The reason she wasn't plastered everywhere in advertisement was more than likely to keep the gender mystery/surprise strong. You see more of something, you get talking about.
