The King of Fighters Ash UM Questionnaire

DISCLAIMER: This questionnaire is not owned or sponsored by SNK Playmore. The questionnaire’s main objective is to collect personal opinions of the KOF community.

I decided to divide it into 2 sets (questions 1-29 (2 categories), then questions 30-58 (3 categories))

1st Set

Answer with yes or no unless you are asked to specify or given specific choices in some questions.

Gameplay
1.  If KOF Ash UM is announced, which battle mode would you prefer? Tag, 3-on-3 or "choose mode before you play"
2.  In case it applies the Tactical Shift System, would you like to have a “2003” and “XI” system select mode?
3.  Which Button Layout should be applied? 4, 5 or Choose your own layout
4.  If it is a 4-button scheme, how will you assign the Tag, Knockdowns, and LDMs?
5.  Would you like to have the Quick Emergency Evade?
6.  Would you like to have about Knockdown attacks, in case this will be a 4-button game?
7.  Would you like to charge Knockdown Attacks from KOF XII?
8.  Would you like to Guard Attack (back + Knockdown) from KOF XII?
9.  Would you like to bring back the Tag Limit System from KOF 2003?
10. Would you like to bring back the Change Attack System from KOF 2003?
11. Would you like to have a Guard Cancel Change Attack from Neo Geo Battle Coliseum?

29. How about Chizuru Kagura, a sub-boss or a final boss?

31. Would you like to hear Remixes of classic KOF/SNK Themes, Remixes of 2003/XI themes or new sets of themes?
32. Would you like to have some special themes for Special Edit themes like in KOF ’98 UM?
33. Which do you prefer when the team theme plays? Leader-based or Team-based
34. How about an arranged version of the Soundtracks?
35. Would you like to reuse the User Interface from KOF 2003, KOF XI or apply a new User Interface?
36. Would you like to reuse some character portraits/illustrations from KOF 2003 or XI or give them a new set?
37. Would you like to reuse the XI Illustrations as official art (plus new ones) in this game or give them a new set?
38. Since Robert in 2003 and NGBC/XI are played by different voice actors, Should 2003 Robert keep his 2003 voice or be “re-voiced” by his NGBC/XI voice actor?
39. Who are the other characters that should be re-recorded?
40. Which characters would you like their sprites to be redrawn, like May Lee and Orochi Chris in 2002 UM?
41. Should the game get some changes in visual effects?
42. Would you like to have added effects when performing a Change Attack and/or Quick/Save Shifts?
43. Should the effects when performing Super Cancels and Dream Cancels be different from performing DMs/LDMs?
44. Would you like to see the DM/LDM effects similar to 2003 or XI or have a completely new DM/LDM Effects?
45. Since it is a dream match, we get special illustrations of teams at the end, Which type of ending illustrations we should get? '98 style or XI style
46. Would you like the default teams in 2003 (including the Sacred Treasures) and XI to have their own Ending Pictures?

48. As for a console port, which console would you like this game to be released? PS2, Wii, 360 or PS3

1. 2003/XI used some form of tagging and so should this.
2. No, just stick with the XI system. 2003 was awkward and barely useable for some characters.
3. 4 buttons. I never liked having the E button in XI, we've been using CD for like 10 years already so there's no need to add more buttons.
4. Tag = AC/BD, LDM = Character dependent
5. Not sure what this is? Do you mean cancelling your attack into a roll or dodge?
6. Yes, essential part of KoF, map them to CD.
7. I do like this feature from KoF XII and I'm sure it would work well in a 2D KoF as well.
8. No, I never want to see that again.
9. Not sure what this is?
10. No.
11. Yes.
12. Yes.
13. Yes.
14. No.
15. Yes.
16. Not 2003 style, but NGBC style Guard Cancel Change Attack would be nice.
17. I'm not really a fan of the Leader system but it doesn't need to be changed.
18. Don't care.
19. IIRC most characters only had one throw, rather than a C and a D throw. All characters should have at least two basic ground throws.
20. Maybe. It might give certain teams more options rather than relying on saving meter for one strong LDM.
21. Probably 99 for a 3-on-3 tag match.

22. I don't know much about XI character tiers, but I always felt that Whip and Yuri felt weaker than the rest of the cast.
23. Not sure, most XI characters have a fairly deep moveset. Maybe add some things from earlier games that are missing.
24. King, either make it better or just make it like 2k2UM HSDM.
25. YES.
26. Everyone. Tongue
27. Too much effort, I don't really care about the way the teams are arranged.
28. One of the bosses, not sure which strength.
29. Chizuru + Maki team as a sub-boss.

39. Hmmm, maybe a lot of them since the voice work on XI was weak imo. Then again I was really annoyed when they replaced a few voices in 2k2UM for seemingly random reasons.

41. Yes, DM/LDM etc. effects in XI were terrible and need to be replaced.

43. Sure.
44. New effects.
45. Something that was actually drawn by a competent artist. The '98UM ones are all done in a cheap, goofy style.

48. 360 & PS3 at least.
49. If you mean Arcade vs Console then yes console should have extra characters (e.g. bosses).
50. Yes.

52. Yes. More challenges. Have the traditional KoF style challenges, but also SF4 style trials for new players to learn the characters. Also don't make some of them so ridiculous like certain 2k2UM challenges.
53. Just give arcade whatever console is going to get in terms of music/stages etc.
54. I don't use them, but provide them for those that do like the blurring.
55. Ugh.
56. No, arcade and console are the same, one set of balance.

57. I don't expect anything, I just want it to happen.
58. Same as XI.

Well, a good quiz to gauge people's opinion/interest in a 2003/XI UM game. I look forward to seeing what other people think of this prospective game. Some of the questions were a bit obvious though e.g. is anyone really going to say "no, I don't want to see any new stages/music/characters"?

Well, here you go, 1st set.

1.  If KOF Ash UM is announced, which battle mode would you prefer? Tag, it's what marked the Ash saga
2.  In case it applies the Tactical Shift System, would you like to have a “2003” and “XI” system select mode? I'd rather make the game stick to the XI style since the 2k3 seemed way too bare-bones, unless they spice it up somehow.
3.  Which Button Layout should be applied? For me the 5-button layout worked really well with the XI system especially regarding the LDM's
4.  If it is a 4-button scheme, how will you assign the Tag, Knockdowns, and LDMs? Skip this one
5.  Would you like to have the Quick Emergency Evade? By it you mean the "combo-breaker" there was on XI were your teamate saves you? If so. Deftly
6.  Would you like to have about Knockdown attacks, in case this will be a 4-button game? Deftly
7.  Would you like to charge Knockdown Attacks from KOF XII? Sure
8.  Would you like to Guard Attack (back + Knockdown) from KOF XII? Not too sure about this one I think i'd skip on this one.
9.  Would you like to bring back the Tag Limit System from KOF 2003? I pretty much awsered this one on the question number 2, so no.
10. Would you like to bring back the Change Attack System from KOF 2003? No, I prefer the quick shift from KoF XI
11. Would you like to have a Guard Cancel Change Attack from Neo Geo Battle Coliseum? That would be interesting, but I think this system is really similar to KoF XI's saving shift
12. Would you like to keep the Quick Shift and Save Shift from KOF XI? Deftly
13. Would you like to keep the Stun Gauge from KOF XI? Deftly
14. Would you like to keep the Judgment System from KOF XI? Also deftly
15. Would you like to keep the Skill Gauge from KOF XI? Yes
16. Would you like to have the Change Attack and Quick/Save Shifts co-exist in this game? Well if they can be separated into grooves i'd say go for it.
17. Would you like to change the Leader System? Not really, the system seemed to work just fine as far as i'm concerned.
18. Would you like to have the ability to switch Leaders before a match in Single Player Mode? I wouldn't mind that
19. Should most characters regain or acquire another Throw Moves?
20. Should Super Desperation Moves be applied for Ash UM? Well, if the game uses the leader system from 2k3 and XI then no. BUT if you'd make a separate groove that takes off certain things like the quick shift or saving shift then you could make as if all character's in the team would be able to SDM
21. How many Seconds should the timer be? 99

Characters
22. Which KOF 2003 and XI characters would you think to be buffed or upgraded? Momoko felt really lacking, Athena got way too many nerfs, Terry, Yuri, Elizabeth and others felt way too nerfed.
23. Which characters would you like to add moves? Silver, Terry, Whip, Elizabeth, Iori (Flameless)
24. Which characters would you like to have different Leader Desperation Moves? Ash, Duo and Shen I particularly dislike those buffing SDMs, i'd rather give them a proper LDM of massive damage
25. Do you like to have EX versions of some characters in this game? Yes
26. If yes, who it will be? Iori, Robert, Terry, Kyo for starters. Iori's EX could be him still with flames, Terry EX could be his classic Red Jacket outfit with more of a RB2 move-set, Robert EX could be his charger move-set from NGBC, Kyo do I really have to explain this one? Classic Kyo of course.
27. There are 43 regular playable characters in 2003 and XI (Arcade version) combined. Arrange them into teams. Most deftly but a few single entries are also welcome
28. Should Adelheid be a Boss (like in 2003) or a Mid-boss (like in XI)? Mid-boss, unless they put him on a team.
29. How about Chizuru Kagura, a sub-boss or a final boss? I'd rather have her on a team than a boss.

First, to say that if they ever do an Ash UM game, I don´t think they would add nothing nor anyone from XII, cos the game would be a copy-paste of old sprites. Anyway, KOF NW would be left all alone if not included in this UM game. Where would you put it?
I would only answer some questions, meaning that others answer will be included in a previous answer or that I don´t specially care about the ones left unanswered.

1.  If KOF Ash UM is announced, which battle mode would you prefer? Would prefer XI style, but "choose mode before you play" would be OK
2.  In case it applies the Tactical Shift System, would you like to have a “2003” and “XI” system select mode? I´d prefer XI sistem, but “choose mode” would be fair.
3.  Which Button Layout should be applied? 4 buttons
4.  If it is a 4-button scheme, how will you assign the Tag, Knockdowns, and LDMs? Roll AB, LDM AC or BD, knockdown CD, tag BC and AD

Finally, I wish that an ultimate UM game would someday be made, with all characters from 94 to XI. Would you do a questionarie for a thing like this too?

It's already exists in XI, and costs 2 skills levels. Like how it works in XI, since changing caracter in-game needs some strategy.

Tag, the XI system is perfect IMO.

2.  In case it applies the Tactical Shift System, would you like to have a “2003” and “XI” system select mode?
See above, IMO the 2003 TS system is merely a "prototype" XI engine.

3.  Which Button Layout should be applied? 4, 5 or Choose your own layout
Five buttons, though I wouldn't mind a sixth "Tag" button to minimize the double-button commands.

4.  If it is a 4-button scheme, how will you assign the Tag, Knockdowns, and LDMs?
With four buttons, I see no alternative to the 2003 way (AC/BD to tag, CD for Knockdown), except that LDM commands should only use a single button rather than two (i.e. qcb, hcf+A OR C, not qcb, hcf+AC).

5.  Would you like to have the Quick Emergency Evade?
Yes.

6.  Would you like to have about Knockdown attacks, in case this will be a 4-button game?
Yes.

7.  Would you like to charge Knockdown Attacks from KOF XII?
No.

8.  Would you like to Guard Attack (back + Knockdown) from KOF XII?
No.

9.  Would you like to bring back the Tag Limit System from KOF 2003?
No.

10. Would you like to bring back the Change Attack System from KOF 2003?

Yes, but the Saving Shift should do no damage and certainly not lead into combos.

Yes.

14. Would you like to keep the Judgment System from KOF XI?
No.

15. Would you like to keep the Skill Gauge from KOF XI?
Yes, it helps balance out the Quick/Saving Shift systems.

16. Would you like to have the Change Attack and Quick/Save Shifts co-exist in this game?
No. IMO the long hitstun of a Change Attack is somewhat redundant in a game where practically every special move/DM is already comboable, so Quick Shifts will suffice.

17. Would you like to change the Leader System?
No.

18. Would you like to have the ability to switch Leaders before a match in Single Player Mode?
Can't say it matters to me, but why not?

19. Should most characters regain or acquire another Throw Moves?
Yes! I particularly miss Ralf and Clark's scrapped throw animations.

20. Should Super Desperation Moves be applied for Ash UM?
Yes. I think every character should have two DMs (one Stock to use), one SDM (two Stocks to use) and one Leader DM (two Stocks + Leader status, more useful than the SDM in some way).

21. How many Seconds should the timer be? 99 or 60
99.

Characters

22. Which KOF 2003 and XI characters would you think to be buffed or upgraded?
Momoko should gain some range and strength, and Elisabeth would definitely be given at least two more special moves.

23. Which characters would you like to add moves?
Again, Elisabeth needs more moves (her Coup de Vein could be changed to a command dash, multiple choice move). Malin could use more effective anti-air/set-up tools, as well.

24. Which characters would you like to have different Leader Desperation Moves?
Hoo boy.

Clark (multi-throw SDM and LDM with Big Ben Edge animation!)

Mary (multi-throw SDM and her Real Bout 1 instant, non-dash Mary Driving Smasher as LDM)

Malin (wire catch with two versions - ground version goes into electric shocks, then pulls the opponent towards her for a crooked arm lariat, air version hangs the opponent from the ceiling, slashes a few times and finishes with a Naruto-style exploding tag)

Athena (Psychic-12 as an SDM, with a few LDM-exclusive finishes)

Kensou (decrease the damage boost but have it last until he tags out and change his DM/SDM animations+damage after it connects)

25. Do you like to have EX versions of some characters in this game?
No, I would rather have the characters feel complete on their own.

depends on how fast the time depletes.

Characters
22. Which KOF 2003 and XI characters would you think to be buffed or upgraded?

Need to be or who would likely be buffed?

Momoko needs to be buffed. Finisher moves with guard crush, invincibility frames, and grabs.

Athena needs to be buffed. Faster walk/run and a more reliable psycho sword. Phoenix arrow (strong) needs more damage.

Duo Lon could use a small face lift as well like a more reliable grab.

Whip needs to be buffed. Make her body box smaller on her j. C while retaining her hitbox. Its BS to have her kicked out of her offensive with a dwn B by pretty much anyone. They kick her whip and shes done.

Yuri needs to be buffed. Air fireball should travel faster with a 4 frame faster recovery. Also a higher stun bar.

Ramon needs to be buffed. His qcb C needs to charge stocks like 2k2. His qcb B wall dives needs to do more damage. His fwd A headbutt needs to come out as a 5 frame move. Dwn C needs more damage. Qcb A needs 2 frame invincibility so he actually has some defence option other than wasting a stock.

23. Which characters would you like to add moves?

Whip should abolish her XI qcf qcf P DM and gain the one she has in 2k2 UM. Her LDM should be her CODE

(something) shot rather than the buffed version of her DM. Dreamcancelable from her qcf qcf P DM

Momoko should have finishers to her chains with inivinciblity, guard crush, grab and high/low game.

Shen to have a double slide. So he can slide two times in any direction he wants and he can end it with a C which is SCable and has autoguard.

24. Which characters would you like to have different Leader Desperation Moves?

Whip to have her gun as LDM

Beni to have his super koreda as his LDM which autofixes like Kyo's LDM when dreamcanceled (I hope they don't leave out dreamcancels).

Duo Lon's LDM needs to atleast chip some damage from dreamcanceling.

25. Do you like to have EX versions of some characters in this game?

Definately

26. If yes, who it will be?

EX Kyo that is not broken beyond words.

EX K' A classic 99 K with a mixture of 2k2. A qcb B/D that cannot cancel into slide but has auto guard. A lower upper cut like 99. A blackout slide that can be SCed from either side that can cross up on wakeup. Fwd B restored to classic knee lift but can't cancel on its own. Classic CD(E). Classic rush DM and his classic glasses

SDM for his LDM. Heat drive DM to have some invincibility at startup.

EX Mary. 98 Incarnation of Mary with a taser as a optional finish to her slide. Also her stomp from her 98UM. LDM should be her qcf qcf K SDM.

EX Duo Lon to be Lin (that would be cool)

Adelheid should become a regular character but also appears like a sub-boss just like XI. Make his damage and speed higher as well as his HP as a sub boss.

29. How about Chizuru Kagura, a sub-boss or a final boss?

It would be interesting to see Chizuru Kagura as a hidden final boss.
